Letter from DWN President, Christine Gallagher Kearney

Happy holidays! We hope this greeting finds you well. We are writing to update you on the status of the DePaul Women’s Network (DWN) for 2012-13 and to share important information from the survey that we sent to the community in September.

DWN Accomplishments

First, I would like to highlight our accomplishments. In June 2012, the DWN board discussed how we could align ourselves better with Vision 2018, DePaul’s new strategic plan. As a result, we developed an ambitious agenda.We’re only half way through the year and we can already count significant achievements:

  1. We brought The OpEd Project to campus, in collaboration with the College of Communication, the Office of Public Relations and Communications, the Office of the Provost and the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity.
  2. We transformed our communication efforts with a new website, a new dynamic blog, a Facebook page and Twitter feed. We also made significant improvements to our LinkedIn page.
  3. We listened to countless women ask for mentoring opportunities. In September, we responded by launching our first workshop opportunity and in November we piloted Speed Mentoring, an event similar to speed dating. Both were rousing successes!
  4. We are partnering with the Women’s Center to bring you a new and improved Annual Event in March 2013. (Planning is well underway, and we’re getting excited for the great speakers and breakout sessions.)
  5. We are engaging Sister Betty Ann McNeil, an expert scholar, to bring St. Louise de Marillac to life during our first annual St. Louise High Tea (in commemoration of St. Louise’s feast day) and our annual Women of Spirit in Action event.

DWN Survey Results

Finally, we created a survey to better understand your needs as female staff and faculty engaged in the work of the university. You spoke up and shared a wealth of information. Here are some highlights:

  1. You overwhelmingly agreed that the three pillars of DWN are networking, development and support. We take this charge very seriously, and we will continue to develop programs and opportunities to engage those areas.
  2. We heard your request for shorter events (two hours or less) held during lunchtime or after work to accommodate your busy schedules. We answered this by keeping our luncheon events punctual and moving some events, such as Speed Mentoring, to the early evening.
  3. We heard that you are interested in programming featuring authors and thought leaders, activists and social justice crusaders, and business leaders and executives both inside and outside DePaul. We hope you will join us and author Julie Murphy Casserly at the Winter Brown Bag or for “Life on the Academic Ladder.” Also, don’t forget to come out for the Annual Event on March 7, where we will showcase women from across Chicago.
